Brooklyn —On April 5 at Prospect Park, the little league parade will head through Park Slope and culminate with a rally at the park's Bandshell. The hand-carved, 1912 Carousel opens for the season, plus old fashioned lemonade is served up at the Lefferts Historic House, and the electric boat Independence begins its spring – fall season of nature cruises on the Park's watercourse. Brooklyn — The Brooklyn Public Library is seeking volunteers to help adults learn to read and write. Prospective participants can attend one literacy volunteer information sessions and learn how to become a volunteer literacy tutor. The program will train volunteers to tutor adults, ages 17 and older, who never learned to read and write. Brooklyn — The Skills Training and Employmnet Project has expanded the Brooklyn Public Library's free job and educational resources. The program provides participants the opportunity to meet with career advisers, assess participants' needs and develop a plan. During training sessions, participants will prepare for career placement tests, improve English literacy skills and attending workshops in resume writing, interviewing and more. Workshops take place at the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza. Brooklyn — Teens can train to be a "T4 Technology Volunteer" at the Brooklyn Public Library. Teens can get trained in advanced technology skills at the Summer Institute. Cambria Heights — The Haitian-Americans United For Progress Inc. is conducting an abstinence education initiative for youngsters ages 9 to 19. The program is designed to reduce the number of youth who participate in premarital sexual activity. The program is designed to work with individual youth to educate them on the physical, psychological and social dangers of sexual activity.
School-year activities are held 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and include dance classes such as Haitian folklore, latin dance and hip hop; health discussions and field trips; and career development workshops. Educational programs will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays to Wednesdays. Saturday education clinics, held noon to 2 p.m., will prepare students for standardized tests. The event will feature two speakers, Roger Savain, co-author with D.G. Woodson of "Mozayik Yon Konbit Literè ann Ayisyen" (Mozayik: An Anthology in the Haitian Language), and professor Thomas Spear of Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Spear will launch the latest book he edited titled "Une Journée Haïtienne" (A Haitian Journey). Savain is the author of two books and a certified translator and interpreter of English and Haitian Creole.
